What is a sealing system?
Different sealing systems ensure better energy efficiency in buildings. They seal wall joints or window connection joints, for example, and do not allow wind or rain to penetrate. At the same time, a controlled exchange of air between the outside and inside is possible. A comfortable indoor climate can be created and energy costs optimised. Hanno offers a huge range of sealing systems. Joint sealing tapes, foil tapes, multifunctional tapes, sealants and sealing foams are available to fulfil a wide range of requirements.
Requirements for sealing systems in the construction industry
Buildings place high demands on the sealing systems to be used. These should prevent uncontrolled air exchange between heated rooms and the outside air or wind and moisture from penetrating the structure from the outside due to driving rain. At the same time, it must be ensured that any moisture (e.g. caused by building moisture) in the window connection joint can diffuse to the outside and thus be removed. The sealing systems used must have a long service life and fulfil their task for many years.
Sealing systems in the building industry: The 3-level model
In order to fulfil the described requirements for sealing systems in the construction industry, a distinction is made between three different sealing system levels.
The three levels are
- Level 1: Separation of indoor and outdoor climate
According to DIN 4108-2, the joint permeability coefficient a ≤ 0.1 m³/ [mh (daPa)2/3] applies to the requirement for component and component connection joints.
Carefully executed air tightnesslevels prevent undefined air flows. Draughts, ventilation heat losses, condensation in the construction and in the connection as well as water transport processes are minimised.
- Level 2: Functional area
In this area, the requirements for thermal insulation, sound insulation and load transfer in particular must be ensured. To ensure that these requirements are met in the long term, it must be guaranteed that this area remains dry.
- Level 3: Weather protection level
The greatest water loads occur on the outside of the joint due to rain, driving rain and run-off rainwater. Defects in the outer seal, tears on the flanks or cracks in the building material lead to water ingress into the joint. Capillary joints in the order of a few tenths of a millimetre are particularly problematic. Wind forces increase water transport. The requirement for the outer sealing layer is therefore permanent protection against external influences, in particular driving rain and wind. The circumferential seal is intended to prevent rainwater (driving rain) from penetrating the joint. Any moisture that has penetrated must be drained to the outside in a controlled manner.
Proof must be provided that water vapour diffusion does not lead to any unacceptable accumulation of moisture in the connection area (component-joint-wall). This can be ensured by applying and implementing the principle of "tighter on the inside than on the outside", with reference to water vapour diffusion in the overall system.
HANNO-Sealing systems for façade construction
Sealing systems in façade construction are primarily used to seal joints in masonry and between different façade elements. Sealing systems used in this area should be durable, paintable and quick to install in large quantities. Especially for these requirements, HANNO offers sealing tapes with strong recovery properties and good thermal and sound insulation. The tapes can be applied quickly thanks to their availability in large roll lengths. Further requirements for the sealing systems in façade construction are high driving rain tightness, air tightness, diffusion openness, strong recovery properties, weather resistance and fulfilment of strict fire protection requirements. Special fire protection tapes are flame-retardant and can be used for partition walls and fire doors, for example.

HANNO-Sealing systems for window construction
The transition from the window to the masonry is a weak point when installing windows. Joints are created that must be professionally sealed to prevent structural damage or to avoid wasting valuable energy. Incorrectly sealed window joints cause moisture damage such as mould and can lead to expensive repair work. Depending on the time of year and the use of air conditioning systems, indoor spaces are warmer or colder than the outside air. In all cases, it must be ensured that the transported moisture does not cause any structural damage as a result of moisture build-up in the building connection joint.
